Harper's Bazaar - April 1998
"Melissa Levis tailors her one-of-a-kind ditties for the rich
and famous"
Levis has carved out a lucrative niche on New York"s charity benefit
and dinner-party circuit, performing witty, customized three-minute
ideas that both praise and poke fun at the excesses of Manhattan's highrollers.
The singer-songwriter, who shares a love of witticisms with her aunt,
playwright Wendy Wasserstein, has crooned to Jonathan Tisch aboard the
QE2 as well as for publicist Peggy Siegal. For bigwigs with the Mercedes
S600, the Gulfstream V and the Hermes wardrobe, Levis' personalized
ditties have become that prized offering - an original girl.
The New York Post - April 1998
"This Diva Sings Your Praises"
Melissa Levis is making sweet music - as a high-society songstress.
The 28-year-old Manhattanite writes and performs witty, tailor-made
songs for glitzy parties, corporate galas, weddings, birthdays and special
occasions. "I'm the chanteuse to the power elite," said Levis
... "They go to great expense to make their parties unique and
Ive become the new caviar. It's the perfect gift."
Crain's New York Business - August 1997
"Ditties Made For Firms"
The 27-year-old Manhattanite has parlayed her songwriting skills into
an unusual business -- performing made-to-order ditties at fund-raisers,
private parties and corporate galas. Over the past three years, she
has serenaded everyone from Loews Hotel chief Jonathan Tisch to outgoing
Brown University President Vartan Gregorian .... Now Ms. Levis and a
friend are working on a new venture, Music on Hold. Their goal: to convince
companies to replace phone line Muzak with corporate jingles written
by Ms. Levis.
New York Magazine - June 1997
"Your Life in Three Minutes: It Could Be Verse"
The "Page Six" party, a different power sector from her usual
uptown scene, is Levis's third event this week and her second of the
evening. Earlier at lawyer Michael Kennedy's 60th birthday party, she'd
taken the stage after roasts by O.J. Lawyer Barry Scheck and former
senator and presidential candidate Eugene McCarthy .... She has earned
her upper-crust bona fides, with years spent at Middlesex and Brown
University. For Jerry Finkelstein, she called his best friends Al D'Amato
and Barbara Walters ... She's at ease singing for Bianca Jagger and
Peggy Siegal, and considers her subjects friends, often joining them
for dessert after the songs.
The New York Times - August 1996
When you are the lead singer of the hottest rock group in the Hamptons,
you perform at the hottest places, which is why Melissa Levis of "Melissa
and the Moguls" sang "The Star Spangled Banner" before
the Bridgehampton polo matches last weekend.
Avenue - June 1996
"Boardroom Boogie"
Between gigs at Tatou, Au Bar, and The Bottom Line, Melissa Levis, half
reporter, half society troubadour, has made a name for herself singing
customized songs at bashes for Jonathan Tisch, Susan Magrino, and the
Hudson Riverkeeper Fund of Robert F. Kennedy Jr.
